This machine belonged to the LRNZ’s
loot. It’s beautiful, and as every Nintendo 8 bit console is built
like a tank. This console is actually a Famicom with an embedded Famicom
Disk System. It can boot from the cartridge or from the disk drive - the
operating mode can be selected using a switch on the top. When using the
disk drive mode, the machine boots with a nice animated “Please Set Disk
Card” screen.
The Nintendo Famicom Disk System used proprietary
3-inch diskettes called “Disk Cards” between 1986 and 1990, based on
Mitsumi’s Quick Disk media.
The gamepads are wired to the console,
but there’s an expansion port on the side that can be used to adapt a
NES pad or a NES Zapper light gun. This console is 100% compatible with
the Famicom games library.
This particular revision of the console (AN-500, the red one) has some assembly errors from the factory that cause audio glitches on certain games. Replacing R201 and R125 with 20kΩ resistors fixes the issue.
